Background of the Study
Obesity is a significant public health concern that has reached alarming levels among adolescents globally, particularly in low- and middle-income countries like Nigeria. One of the key contributors to this trend is the increased consumption of fast food, which is typically high in calories, fats, and sugars. In Sokoto State, the rapid growth of fast food outlets and the increasing popularity of processed foods among adolescents have raised concerns about their contribution to the rising obesity rates.
Adolescents are at a critical stage in their development, and poor dietary habits during this period can lead to long-term health problems, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. The growing preference for fast food, coupled with limited physical activity, exacerbates the risk of obesity among young people. This study aims to assess the impact of fast food consumption on obesity rates among adolescents in Sokoto State and explore the factors influencing their dietary choices.
Statement of the Problem
The consumption of fast food has become a widespread behavior among adolescents in Sokoto State, contributing to the increasing rates of obesity in this population. Despite the known health risks associated with obesity, such as chronic diseases and psychological issues, there is limited research on the specific impact of fast food consumption on obesity rates among adolescents in the state. This study aims to address this gap by investigating the relationship between fast food consumption and obesity in Sokoto State.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the prevalence of fast food consumption among adolescents in Sokoto State.
2. To evaluate the relationship between fast food consumption and obesity rates among adolescents in Sokoto State.
3. To recommend strategies for promoting healthier eating habits and reducing obesity rates among adolescents in Sokoto State.
Research Questions
1. What is the prevalence of fast food consumption among adolescents in Sokoto State?
2. How does fast food consumption contribute to obesity rates among adolescents in Sokoto State?
3. What strategies can be implemented to reduce fast food consumption and obesity rates among adolescents in Sokoto State?
Research Hypotheses
1. Fast food consumption is prevalent among adolescents in Sokoto State.
2. There is a significant relationship between fast food consumption and obesity rates among adolescents in Sokoto State.
3. Promoting healthier eating habits will reduce the prevalence of obesity among adolescents in Sokoto State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on adolescents aged 10-18 years in Sokoto State. Limitations include challenges in accurately assessing fast food consumption patterns and the potential reluctance of adolescents to disclose their eating habits.
